One of the key new features on the iPhone 5s is the presence of a fingerprint scanner on the Home button, called Touch ID. It essentially remembers your fingerprint and then lets you and only you unlock your phone or make iTunes purchases by simply touching your finger on the Home button.
Turns out, however, those are going to be the only use cases for Touch ID, at least for now. Apple’s Senior Vice President Phil Schiller has revealed that the Touch ID sensor is off limits to third party developers and refused to comment on whether this would change in future.
From a security point of view, this move makes sense. Giving access to your fingerprint to third party developers can open a can of worm in case things go pear-shaped. If someone steals your password, you can always change it but you can’t do the same with your fingerprint. Apple itself only saves your fingerprint on the device and does not upload it to their own servers. So no wonder they are not interested in giving away access to your fingerprint to third party developers.
Things may change in the future if Apple figures out a way for developers to use Touch ID without actually getting access to your fingerprint but for now entering passwords is still the way to go.
After rumors made it abundantly clear that Apple will be delivering yet another S refresh to its flagship this year, rather than a proper upgrade, yesterday’s event become all about the iPhone 5c for me. I was quite excited to see Apple leave its comfort zone and do a smartphone that’s quite different from anything they have done so far.
As it turns out, though, the modest only upgrade that is the iPhone 5s, was only the second biggest disappointment of the night, with the iPhone 5c turning out to be the most notable consumer-stabbing, sales-serving excuse of a product. I know those are some strong words, which is why I waited with this article to see if the bitter taste in my mouth will go away, but sadly it didn’t.
Let’s get something out of the way first – the iPhone 5c is a pretty good smartphone. It’s fresh looking and adequately powered to be a decent mid-ranger, plus its camera has proved to be good enough for the last-year’s flagship. So how bad can it be?
It’s actually the way Apple intends on positioning the iPhone 5c really grinds my gears. It’s not a replacement of the iPhone 4S, which will still remain in service. No, it replaces the iPhone 5 while changing the phone’s target group altogether thus leaving upgraders from the iPhone 4 or iPhone 4S with no choice but going for the more expensive iPhone 5s.
The iPhone 5c takes the place that was supposed to be taken by the iPhone 5 – a cheaper, last year’s model that now should have provided more bang for buck than is usual for Apple’s products. So instead of getting the option to buy an iPhone 5, upgraders looking a cheaper new iPhone are instead faced by a product that’s too thick, too plastic, and too toy-looking to be worth the upgrade. On top of that, Apple’s asking price for the 5c is the same as the iPhone 5 would have had, had it not been discontinued.
So that’s the first blunder right there – the long-rumored affordable iPhone is not all that affordable, but it still lacks the premium build of the iPhone 5 to make up for it. Yup, the iPhone 5c costs about €100 more than the metal-clad HTC One (this is for the respective 32GB versions). That’s simply ridiculous, but then again, Apple has never been known for reasonable pricing, so if that was all, I would have let it slide.
It’s what Apple did to the iPhone 5 that is the bigger problem. Replacing a slim, light, aluminum-clad handset with a thicker, heavier plastic-made one (okay, okay, hard-coated polycarbonate) makes absolutely no sense. Put side-by-side and priced equally, the iPhone 5c would stand no chance of being picked over the iPhone 5 by the majority of users.
Which brings us to the main issue – Apple’s reasoning behind the whole development of the iPhone 5c. It’s not about an upgrade to the iPhone 5 (which it clearly isn’t), it’s not about the new design (which is worse than the old one), it’s not about offering a budget product (which again, it’s not), it’s all about boosting the sales of the iPhone 5s.
You see, last year many users went for the cheaper iPhone 4S and iPhone 4 instead of buying the latest iPhone 5. These people voted with their wallets, telling Apple that the iPhone 5 isn’t innovative enough. Those people simply wanted any iOS device went for the cheaper phones since they still had the premium build quality and offered not much inferior user experience.
Well, this year, Apple again fails to acknowledge this vote (and the pressure from its own board of directors, obviously). They still came up with a slight upgrade over last year’s flagship in an effort of cashing in on the current design as much as possible. Instead of stepping up with the innovation and making an iPhone for everyone to fell in love with it, they simply threw another half-hearted effort hoping it would still do for this round of the game.
Instead, to ensure the high sales of the iPhone 5s, they made the cheaper iPhone 5c less likeable. Here, have a cheaper looking iPhone 5c instead. They are sending a message out there – you cannot have our current flagship design for less money. And this might as well turn into a trend for the company in the years to come.
The company chose to cripple last year’s model just so everyone goes for the most expensive, even if unspectacular flagship, instead of going the other way round, by making the new flagship so desirable that no one would actually consider the midranger.
It’s a strategy that might as well work, given how many people have already heavily invested in iOS apps, but it’s not the right way to treat long-standing customers.

Samsung jumped head first into the smartwatch field with the Galaxy Gear. It’s made out of stainless steel for the body and futuristic material for the strap. The heart of Gear is a 1.63″ Super AMOLED touch screen with 320 x 320 resolution (that’s 277ppi pixel density).
In a throwback to the S9110 watch phone, the Galaxy Gear features a speaker and mic, so it can handle calls (with a noise cancellation mic), but also understand voice commands with S Voice.
Unlike the rumors, the Samsung Galaxy Gear does not run Android, but needs a connection to a Galaxy device – Galaxy S III and S4, Note II and III, Note 10.1 2014, the older devices (that is not Note III or 10.1 2014) will need a software update.
The connection is achieved through power-efficient Bluetooth 4.0 LE. The watch itself is powered by an 800MHz processor with 512MB RAM. A 315mAh battery provides juice for “more than a day”, which is another way of describing the rating of 25+ hours.
The watch uses its Bluetooth connection to the smartphone for the Auto Lock feature – if you’re over a meter and a half away, i.e. the phone isn’t in your pocket or backpack, it will lock the phone. The Find My Device feature will help you get your smartphone back by making it beep, flash its lights and vibrate.
The Samsung Galaxy Gear features an autofocus 1.9MP camera with a BSI sensor that can capture 720p video. It can even do Sound & Shot snaps. All that is stored on 4GB of internal storage.
That’s great for capturing fleeting moments of your life which will be gone by the time you take your phone out of the pocket. With an accelerometer and gyroscope the Gear will also help your workouts by counting your steps and tracking your runs.
The Galaxy Gear measures 36.8 x 56.6 x 11.1mm and weighs 73.8g. It will be available later this month in most of the world, but the US and Japan will get it in October. Color options for the wrist band include Jet Black, Mocha Grey, Rose Gold, Wild Orange, Oatmeal Beige and Lime Green.
Yesterday, Samsung took the wraps off the Galaxy Note 3 smartphone at IFA in Berlin. The company’s latest flagship comes packed with features, as is usual for a Samsung smartphone, and there is a whole bunch of new stuff to go alone with the stuff we have already seen in the past.
To show off all the new features of the Galaxy Note 3, Samsung has now released a fairly lengthy six and half minute long video that goes through each of them. Let’s talk about them briefly before we get to the video.
First of all is the design. Unlike the Galaxy Note II which looked more or less like a bigger Galaxy S III, the Galaxy Note 3 is, ahem, notably different from the Galaxy S4. Samsung has eschewed the strange pattern and glossy finish back cover of the S4 for a faux leather finish for the Note 3, complete with a fake stitching pattern around the edges. While it’s not quite the real deal, it looks significantly better than the previous Galaxy smartphones and is also said to have a better feel in the hand.
Around the edges, Samsung has once again gone for a metal finish but with a serrated pattern that is said to resemble the pages on the side of a notepad. The choice of making it simultaneously look like metal as well as paper is, in the very least, oddly conflicting. The front of the device retains the Galaxy family look, which is to say it looks dull and uninteresting.
The Galaxy Note 3 comes with a whole range of flip wallet covers in multiple colors, including ones with a window on the front to quickly access the display.
In terms of hardware, the Galaxy Note 3 runs on either the quad-core Snapdragon 800 clocked at 2.3GHz or the octa-core Exynos 5 clocked at 1.9GHz for the A15 cores and 1.3GHz for the A7 cores. There is also 3GB of RAM, 32/64GB internal storage space with microSD card slot, 13 megapixel rear camera capable of 4K recording at 30fps on the Snapdragon 800 model and 1080p60 recording on the Exynos model, 5.7-inch, 1920×1080 resolution Super AMOLED display, 3,200mAh battery and the latest Android 4.3 Jelly Bean.
The software is where the real innovation has happened and once again Samsung has made good use of the capacitive stylus that comes with the device. Now you can tap anywhere on the screen by pressing the button on the S Pen and bring up a special Air command menu, with options such as Action Memo, Scrap booker, Screen Write, S Finder and Pen Window.
Action Memo lets you quickly take down a memo by drawing it with a stylus and depending upon what you wrote you get options such as phone, contacts, messaging, email, browser, map and task.
Scrap booker lets you collect content such as videos, images, web pages, etc. and place them in your scrap book, which you can then share with others.
Screen Write lets you write directly on your screenshots so they are more personalized.
S Finder lets you find any content on your device by drawing the text with the stylus. The phone will even find handwritten text within saved memos that match your entered text.
Lastly, there is Pen Window, which lets you draw a small square on the screen and select from a small group of apps that you can open in that small square. You can have apps like calculator, clock, browser, phone, contacts, etc. that hover on top of your existing window so you don’t have to leave your existing app to, say, make a quick calculation.
Other than that, Samsung has also updated the S Note app with new UI and features and it also syncs with your Samsung or Evernote account.
The multiwindow feature that debuted with the Note 10.1 has also been improved. You now have more apps to choose from and with some apps like ChatOn you can have two instances of the same app running so you can chat with multiple people simultaneously. You can also easily drag and drop context around between the two windows.
Finally, there is a new My Magazine feature, which brings together all your news feeds and social network updates into one magazine like app that sort of looks like Flipboard.

Sony has unveiled two portable battery chargers that are now available for the Indian market.The portable chargers in question are the CP-F5 and CP-F10L, which sport a battery capacity of 5,000mAh and 10,000mAh respectively. The CP-F5 sports an aluminum casing which measures 70.4 x 128 x 9.4mm and weighs 156 grams. The Li-Po battery that’s inside can charge any gadget quite quickly (the output is rated at 1.5A) and is able to retain 90% of its capacity after 1000 chargers.
The CP-F10L portable charger is the larger one with 10,000mAh Li-Po battery and its aluminum casing sports dual USB output ports, enabling it to charge two devices at the same time. As a result its considerably thicker than the CP-F5, at 70.4 x 130.6 x 16.5 mm and weighs 260 grams. Its output is 3.6A (1.8A per port).
The CP-F5 has a maximum supply time of 2 hours and is fully charged after 6 hours on an AC adaptor. As for the larger portable charger, its 10,000mAh battery can be drained in about hour and a half. Because of its larger capacity, it’ll need about 7-8 hours to fully charge using an AC adaptor and 23 hours on USB.
The CP-F5 USB portable charger is available across all Sony Centers and major electronic stores across India from August 2013 and costs $42 (Rs.2790), while the CP-F10L retails for $76.
We have been hearing about and seen some images of Sony’s outlandish camera accessory for smartphones that is basically a giant camera that snaps onto the back of your existing smartphone. Now we have some more images, along with the prices these devices will be selling for.
As we had learned before, there will be two of these, with varying specifications. Named the SmartShot QX10 and the SmartShot QX100, the former will have an 18 megapixel sensor with f/3.3-5.9 optics whereas the latter will have a 20.2 megapixel camera with f/1.8-4.9 optics.
While on paper the resolution might not sound all that great anymore, it’s important to remember that these devices will have much bigger sensors compared to traditional smartphone cameras. Moreover, you have proper optical zoom with Carl Zeiss optics and optical image stabilization.
Both the accessories will snap onto the back of your existing smartphone and interface with it over Wi-Fi using Sony’s PlayMemories app (which is also used to pair your smartphone with Sony point and shoot cameras for transferring images).
The QX10 and the QX100 are said to be priced at $250 and $450 respectively, and will be announced on September 4 along with the Xperia Z1 in Berlin. We’ll have more information and hopefully some sample images then, along with a satisfactory answer to who exactly this is targeted at and why that person shouldn’t just carry a separate camera instead.
If you have been around over the last few days, you probably know that we’ve been hard at work, putting the Sony Xperia Z Ultra monster of a phablet through its paces. And while the review is still some way off from being complete, we though you might enjoy some photos coming from the camera of the device.
It’s a bit early to pass any final verdict at this point, as we need to do some more shooting before we are ready for that, so we’ll just let you enjoy the shots.
Of course, the Xperia Z Ultra is hardly the most comfortable device for taking photos on the go and the lack of a flash unit clearly points that photography wasn’t too high on the Sony priority list. Still an 8MP snapper will certainly tempt quite a lot of its adopters to use it as their main camera.
