LG announces QuickWindow flip cover for LG G2, forgets that the phone isn’t official yet

LG is not keeping the G2, its next Android flagship, a secret. The company even started announcing accessories for the phone, with photos and everything. Okay, it’s a flip cover so not much of the phone itself is visible, but LG could have waited a week until August 7 when the G2 will officially be unveiled.

Anyway, back to the accessory – it’s a flip cover with a window called QuickWindow that lets a small part of the screen show notification and controls from several apps (*cough*).

The QuickWindow UX is triggered by a swipe and shows the time (with several watch faces), but you can also check the weather, keep a timer app, set alarms, control the music player and view incoming calls and messages.

The QuickWindow flip cover for LG G2 will be available in seven colors – black, white, pink, purple, blue, mint and yellow – and will launch simultaneously with the phone.

We’ll be covering the G2 launch, so tune in for more details on the phone (which will pack a 5.2″ 1080p screen and a Snapdragon 800 chipset) and any other accessories

Samsung said to be working on a true octa-core CPU

Rumors have it that Samsung has its first “true octa-core” CPU in the works. This follows MedaTek’s announcement of the first eight-core processor a few days ago.

The Samsung Exynos 5440 Octa is the company’s latest octa-core CPU at the moment, but technically it isn’t a true octa-core since a maximum of four cores can work at once – either the four Cortex A7 or the four Cortex A15 cores.

There’s no information whether Samsung has worked out a way to provide a reasonable battery life with eight cores working full time just yet. Word from around the web is that the company will be ready in 2014 at earliest to provide information regarding its purported true octa-core processor.

Until then, we’ll have to make due with the Exynos 5420 Octa chipsett that again has the quad Cortex A7 and Cortex A15 cores, but are slightly overclocked to provide more punch than its predecessor. We’ll see just how powerful it is when we see it powering the Samsung Galaxy Note III in September.

WhatsApp to start charging $0.99 per year now

WhatsApp, the hugely popular cross-platform instant messaging app that lets you message other users for free over the internet, is starting to charge an annual fee for its service.

It will now cost $0.99 per year for you to be able to message your friends on WhatsApp. However, both new and current users will get the first year for free. The update applies to all versions of the app, including both Android and iPhone.

Mobile messaging applications like WhatsApp and Viber have exploded alongside the increased adaptation of smartphones, and have virtually replaced SMS as the preferred form of messaging between mobiles. WhatsApp currently boats some 250 million active users.

BlackBerry Messenger coming to Android and iOS in September

BlackBerry’s CEO Thorsten Heins announced that the popular BlackBerry Messenger will be available on Android and iOS back at the BlackBerry live 2013 conference. We then had a tweet from the BlackBerry Worldwide tweeter account stating that the app will be available on June 27.

Unfortunately, the account didn’t turn out to be an official BlackkBerry affair and the BlackBerry Messenger for the Android and iOS did not make its appearance on the suggested date. However, the much-awaited BBM for the two of the most popular smartphone platforms will be available “this summer”, according to the BlackBerry India managing director.

The BlackBerry executive clarified that what he meant is North American summer, which lasts until September. This basically means we are two months away from getting the trademark messanger service on non-BlackBerry smartphones now.

Samsung shows 10 features you probably didn’t know the Galaxy S4 had

Samsung’s TouchWiz is loaded with ridiculous amounts of features (especially on the Galaxy S4), it took even us quite a while to find them all. Not that we’re complaining – as gadget geeks finding new toggles and buttons to play with is half the fun of a new phone. Yet, Samsung takes pity on those less tech inclined and posted a list of 10 features the Samsung Galaxy S4 has out of the box that you might have missed.

They range from “that’s nice, I guess” to genuinely useful features.

One great feature to save on battery life is the Wi-Fi Timer. It’s a little hard to find – Settings > Connections > Wi-Fi > Advanced >Wi-Fi Timer – but it can automatically turn on Wi-Fi and then turn it off again at preset time. For example, switch it off during the night and then back on in the morning so you don’t miss any notifications.

The notifications that arrive in the middle of the night would have woken you up, so it’s better this way. What about meetings, school hours and other times you don’t want noisy notifications interrupting? Blocking mode (Settings > My device > Blocking mode) can turn off select notifications (even the LED indicator) either manually or during a select time period. You can also add contacts to the Allowed list so you don’t miss any vital calls.

What if you get a call in a noisy environment? The Samsung Galaxy S4 screen has several buttons on its in-call screen to help. One button can boost the volume, another can activate noise reduction so the other side can hear you as well and you can even use the equalizer to tweak the in-call volume to your liking.

Speaking of sound tuning, the Adapt Sound will tune the music player for you. You just have to plug in your favorite set of headphones and go through the test which determines the capabilities of your headphones and tunes the equalizer appropriately. The Preview feature will show you what a difference that made.

The 5″ 1080p screen of the Galaxy S4 is big enough to run several apps simultaneously. The detachable keyboard complements that quite well – you can use it to type in one app (an SMS or in a chat client), while the other half of the screen shows you a map, your schedule or anything else that might be relevant to the conversation.

There’s more. For watching videos, you can zoom in with a pinch gesture, adjust the sound and brightness during playback straight from the screen. Or if you’re watching the TV, you can put the IR remote feature WatchON in the notification area or as a widget on the lockscreen.

The notification area can be tweaked too – rearrange the quick toggles, view all quick toggles directly with a two finger swipe, even hide the brightness slider. The lockscreen has plenty of options too – you can have an easy camera launch gesture (like on stock Android) and you can change the personal message on the lockscreen, even pick the color and font.

Chromecast is smart stick for your TV that costs just $35

Google unveiled a smart HDMI stick for TVs – unlike most sticks we’ve seen so far, Chromecast runs a simplified version of Chrome OS rather than Android. It integrates with Google services like YouTube, Google Play Music, Google Play Video and the Chrome app (on a phone, tablet or laptop). Long story short, its the Nexus Q done right.

How does Chromecast work? Say you’re viewing a YouTube video on your phone (Android or iOS) and hit the Chromecast button. The device will switch on your TV if it’s off, change the input so that the TV displays that feed and start playing.

Multiple devices (you, your friends and family) can add videos to the playback queue, searching for new YouTube videos doesn’t disturb the playback on the TV. It’s not just YouTube, the Google Play Movies and the updated Netflix app supports it too.

You can control playback from the phone – change volume with the volume rocker and skip videos straight from the lockscreen. There’s more – if you have to go out, you can hit the Chromecast button again and playback jumps back to your phone. Or you can move it to a tablet instead, it will continue from where it left off.

Chromecast also handles DJ duties – you can play music from the Google Play Music store and Pandora too (all of this is compatible with iOS devices as well).

Another thing the little stick can show on your TV is Chrome tabs – you can “project” a Chrome tab to the TV and browse photos on Google+ or even watch a video on Vimeo (this feature is still in beta). New features can be added by third party devs through the Google Cast SDK for Android, iOS and Chrome (browsers for Windows, Mac OS and Chrome OS).

Chromecast is a 2″ stick that plugs into a free HDMI port on your TV and requires external power through a microUSB port. But best of all it costs only $35 (the Nexus Q was ridiculously priced, it would have never worked). It will be available later today in the US – you can snag it from the Play Store, Amazon.com and BestBuy.com. Best Buy stores will carry it from July 28. If you buy a Chromecast, Netflix will give you a free 3 month subscription. Availability in other countries coming soon.

Google releases Play Games app for Android

Google has released a new dedicated app for all the games on the Play Store, called Google Play Games. This app puts focus on discovering new games as well as tracking your achievements and scores as well as playing multiplayer games with your friends. It’s more or less the Game Center equivalent for Android.

The Play Games app looks quite similar to the new Play Music and Play Movies apps. You can see a list of your friends from Google+ with details about the games they have and their achievements. Currently, not a lot of games support this feature so you’re likely to see mostly empty profile pages.

The app also has a featured games section where it highlights new games. Below, it suggests people that you may know but aren’t already in your Google+ circles.

The app keeps a list of your own games, along with recently played ones and your achievements. Just like the Play Music, Movies or Books app, you can’t actually purchase anything from this app but are directed towards the Play Store app when you hit the purchase button. You do see the list of achievements (including the ones you’ve unlocked) and leaderboards for that game, which is not visible on the Play Store.

The Play Games app is now available on the Play Store and can be downloaded from the link below.

Nokia unhappy with Windows Phone 8 progress

Nokia is by far the biggest player in the Windows Phone 8 game. However, the Finns doesn't seem to be too happy with the progress of the latest version of the platform.

In an interview with International Business Times, Nokia’s Vice President of App development, Bryan Biniak has expressed his disappointment over the Microsoft’s approach in developing the Windows Phone operating system. Mr. Bryan feels that the platform is running out of time to make a big impact.

The lack of apps for Windows Phone seems to be the major concern for the Nokia’s Vice President. He says that “if there is an app that somebody cares about that’s not there, that’s a missed opportunity of a sale”.

Although, Nokia has some of the best smartphones in the market like the Lumia 1020 and Lumia 920 with great hardware, the fact that it runs on a slowly developing eco-system hasn’t helped the company’s cause. Biniak feels that “without apps, the hardware is useless”.

Sony’s Xperia Z Ultra is a powerful phone that’s too large for your hand

Mobile phones started off their life as rather large devices, but the industry worked hard to miniaturize them, and after years and years of progress, managed to produce tiny, powerful phones. Now, as smartphones take over the mobile device industry, their screens become larger, increasing the size of the devices once again. At the moment, this trend culminates in Sony’s newly announced Xperia Z Ultra, an enormous 6.4-inch smartphone.

It’s strange to think that the industry spent around a decade minimizing the size of mobile phones — even creating the flip phone so we could halve the space our phones occupy — only to be working diligently to increase the size of them once again. This time, at least, large, pretty screens are an arguably worthwhile reason to increase our phone size, and Sony’s Xperia Z Ultra certainly supports that notion with its 6.4-inch 1080p Triluminos (essentially Sony’s Retina, more or less) display. Though the Ultra is certifiably enormous for something marketed as a phone, it’s still quite thin at 6.5mm, but due to its sheer size, it still weighs a hefty 212 grams for a genre of device traditionally used with just one hand.

Regardless of how ineffective-for-a-portable-phone the size of the device might seem, it does stock some powerful components within its guttyworks, specifically Qualcomm’s 2.2GHz quad-core Snapdragon 800. Along with the top-of-the-line SoC, the Ultra comes with 16GB of on-board storage (11GB of which is available), but if that seems a bit low the phablet has a MicroSD slot that can house a 64GB card. The Ultra will be LTE capable — though which bands have not been disclosed as of yet — and will sport a 2-megapixel front-facing camera, and an 8-megapixel rear facing camera that can take HDR images and video.

The screen, aside from being large and pretty, is also able to recognize more than just a capacitative stylus, as it will accept input from a pen with a tip larger than 1mm, or any graphite pencil — though you likely won’t want to be writing on your new phablet. The phone is also dust- and waterproof to a degree, with IP55 and IP58 ratings.

The original Xperia Z — the one that isn’t a result of mad phone science — suffered from poor battery life of only around three to four hours of use. The battery in that phone — which has a smaller 5-inch screen — has a capacity of 2,330 mAh. The Ultra upgrades the battery (as it probably should, due to the upgraded screen) capacity to 3,000 mAh, so hopefully the life has been extended along with it.

The Xperia Z Ultra will run the latest version of Android, 4.2 Jelly Bean, when it releases sometime toward the end of this year. Price and a more solid release date have not yet been announced, but the “phone” will initially release in white, purple, and black colors, so you can start planning your new, matching wardrobe right now.

Even though phablets seem ever-present, they’re more a niche market at the moment, barely taking any ground from hand-sized smartphones, as well as tablet-sized tablets. Regardless of the practicality of a 6.4-inch phone, Sony’s Xperia Z Ultra does have some impressive guts under the hood going for it. Whether it’s enough to hoist the phablet scene to the forefront, though, remains to be seen.

Samsung finally overtakes Apple as smartphone profit leader, thanks to Galaxy S4 and Android

Once relegated to cheap, low-margin phones, Android’s leading vendor Samsung has now overtaken Apple as the world’s most profitable smartphone vendor. Samsung’s estimated $5.2 billion in profits from phone sales compares favorably with Apples’s estimated iPhone profits of $4.2 billion, according to Strategy Analytics — the first time in nearly four years that the iPhone hasn’t held the profit crown.

Samsung’s profit lead is driven by a continuing boom in unit volume. Strategy Analytics estimates its smartphone market share grew to 33.1% on sales of 76 million phones during the quarter. Apple is estimated to have a 13.6% share on sales of 31.2 million phones. While Apple sold nearly 20% more phones than the same quarter a year ago, it hasn’t kept pace with Samsung’s torrid growth — especially in the fastest growing overseas markets.

More worrying for Apple than losing its profit crown is its relative weakness overseas. Sales in bellwether market China were actually down $3.6 billion quarter-to-quarter, with Europe and the rest of Asia also weaker. Without introducing less-expensive alternative versions of its iPhone, it is likely Apple’s international market share will continue to erode as less-expensive Android phones continue to improve in functionality.

Of course, this quarter represents a trough for Apple, pending expected new product announcements in the fall. It is similarly a bit of a peak for Samsung as its flagship Galaxy S4 has just rolled out, but the numbers are a wake up call that the iPhone-dominated smartphone sector is now up for grabs. Many developers have been focusing primarily on iOS because of its large, unified market share and issues with Android fragmentation. With the Android platform settling down and Google taking more control of its APIs, these sales figures will provide additional incentive to shift resources towards Android development.

In response to analysts’ questions about the growing clamor for a less-expensive iPhone, Apple CEO Tim Cook took a page from Amazon’s Jeff Bezos’ book, essentially telling analysts to “trust me.” However, unlike Steve Jobs, Cook hasn’t earned that kind of trust from the markets yet, which partially explains Apple’s continued stock price slide. Nearly flat since Cook was announced as CEO in 2011, Apple’s stock (AAPL) is down over 20% in the last year, while both the NASDAQ and Samsung are up by about the same amount.

Conventional wisdom says that Apple either needs to innovate in a new, blockbuster category — perhaps the much-rumored Apple iTV — or fix the bleeding in smartphone market share with lower-cost models for international markets. Apple is a company that has often proved conventional wisdom wrong, but if it’s planning to do so this time it will have to do it under a new CEO.

Beats announces new Studio headphones for $299

Beats headphones aren’t the most popular among the audiophile community for their exaggerated bass response and high price tag (considering the sound). Despite that, they continue to be some of the most popular brand of headphones around because let’s face it, most people can’t tell good sound even if it hit them in the face.

The original Studio headphones released back in 2008 are one of the most popular model in the Beats range. The company has now revamped it after all these years with some new features and allegedly improved audio quality.

The new Studio headphones use what Beats calls Beats Acoustic Engine, which is their DSP software. Beats says this makes the music sound more like the artist intended. What this sounds to me is that Beats is once again messing with the sound to exaggerate the bass before it reaches your ears. Any audiophile would tell you that the best way to get accurate sound is to have high quality drivers, not a DSP that alters the original sound.

Other than that the Studios also have noise-cancelling feature with two modes. The music mode tones down the noise cancellation in favor of audio quality. But if you just want to use the headphones as an expensive pair of earmuffs while not listening to music, then a dedicated mode will turn the noise cancellation all the way up.

The Studio also includes a built-in rechargeable battery that promises 20 hours of life. The battery can be charged using a micro USB cable and you can see the remaining charge on the headphones.

The design, as you can see, is utterly gorgeous. But then again, that has never been a problem with Beats headphones. They have ensured that it looks clean and stylish with no visible screws and made it 13 percent lighter than the previous model.

The Beats Studio headphones will go on sale in the beginning of August for $299.95.

Google Nexus 7 priced, up for preorder in the UK

The Nexus 7 refresh introduced by Google yesterday is now up for preorder in the UK. Unfortunately the availability news isn’t great with Britain residents having to wait until September to get the hot slate.
The tablet will be priced at £199.99 for the 16GB model, and £239.99 for the 32GB variant.

Models can be pre-purchased now from PC-World and Currys.

The exact shipment date is listed at September 13, and seeing as how both these retailers were launch partners for the original Nexus 7 last year, it’s unlikely that this date will change. Unfortunately, neither of the models for sale offer LTE support, which is likely to be released at a later date.

The UK will be one of the second wave of countries to receive the new Nexus 7, alongside Germany, South Korea, Japan, Spain, Canada, France and Australia.

Riptide GP2 for iOS and Android game review

Riptide GP2 is the successor to last year’s Riptide GP. For those who don’t know, Riptide GP was a racing game but unlike most other games in this genre, this one let you race around a track filled with water on personal watercrafts, doing all sorts of crazy stunts.
The new one takes it several steps ahead with new tracks, new crafts, new stunts, updated visuals and much more. Let’s see how much of an improvement it is over its predecessor.

Title Riptide GP2
Developer Vector Unit
Platform iOS Android
Release Date
July 25, 2013 July 23, 2013
Content rating
4+ Everyone
Size 48.2MB 46MB
Price $2.99

Gameplay

The gameplay in Riptide GP2 remains identical to the first game. You ride a watercraft around a water filled track and race other riders to the finish line. While going around the track you come across ramps which let you jump in air and perform stunts, which in turn earn you boost.
One of the key areas where Riptide GP2 improves upon its predecessor is by providing a lot more stunts to the player. The original game had a handful of stunts that could be performed by swiping on both sides of the screen in a particular pattern. The new one has all the previous stunts but also adds several more that can be unlocked using points that you earn as you play the game. These new stunts are a welcome addition but some of them can be pretty tricky to pull off and remembering them all can get difficult. Eventually, you just end up calling upon the handful that you do end up remembering.
Another addition is the ability to upgrade your watercraft. You earn money by winning races, which can then be spent in upgrading your watercraft. You also purchase faster crafts but that’s a lot more expensive option.
Riptide GP2 also brings several new tracks. Unlike the original game where after a while it felt you are just going around the same tracks in different directions, the new game has a lot more tracks and doesn’t begin to feel old as quickly.
The controls are similar to the previous game but the ability to brake as been added, although you probably won’t be using it a lot. The craft accelerates automatically. You turn by tilting the device sideways or by enabling controls on the side of the screen. To perform stunts, you swipe on both sides of the screen in the respective pattern. A boost button is placed on the screen, slightly out of reach for quick access, that brings a quick and temporary boost of speed. You have a boost bar on the screen that shows how much boost you have left. Once enabled you can’t stop it until the entire reserved drains. You earn boost by performing stunts. If the stunts are are original you get 2x the boost. For repeated stunts you only get 1x boost.
On Android you also get support for controllers, with iOS version set to get controller support shortly, possibly with iOS 7.

The online aspect of the game has been improved a lot in the sequel. You have online multiplayer that pits you against three other players, whether they are your friends or complete strangers. In case of the latter, the game matches you against players with similar stats and craft as you so there is no unfair advantage to anyone. Playing against real people is admittedly a lot more fun but it was also a bit too easy to win somehow. You guys out there playing this game in multiplayer seriously need to try harder.
Online features are present in both iOS and Android version. On iOS the game uses the tried and tested Game Center and on Android it takes advantage of the new Play Games features, such as multiplayer gaming, achievements and online leaderboard. It also supports cloud syncing on both platforms. It’s good to see Android finally catch up in the online gaming aspect. Hopefully, more games will add support for these features soon the way iOS games do.

Graphics and Sound

Riptide GP2 brings subtle but noticeable improvements over its predecessor. You can immediately tell that the water looks better in the new game, among other things. Tegra 4 and new iOS devices get all the best stuff, such as high resolution textures, complex shaders, dynamic lighting and real-time shadows. Non Tegra 4 Android devices and non-Retina iOS devices get reduced visuals but the game still looks pretty impressive nonetheless.
On both platforms you can tune visuals to enable or disable certain features to get the right balance of visual quality and performance. For example, at default settings on the iPad mini the game is fairly smooth but enable things such as lens splash FX and higher quality shaders and the game starts stuttering. Also, certain options are not even available on the iPad mini. If you have an iPhone 5 or the fourth generation iPad with Retina display, you’d be able to get the best visuals without any performance penalty. As for Android, the only Tegra 4 device that you can purchase right now is the NVIDIA SHIELD and even that is not out as of now.
In terms of sound, Riptide GP2 does about alright. There are some dubstep tracks that play in the background as you play and depending upon your preference for dubstep you’d either love them or hate them. The crafts all sound about the same, which is essentially the same as a glorified hair dryer. Then again these things don’t sound much different in real life. Riptide GP2 also adds cheering of crowd, which I believe wasn’t present in the previous game.

Verdict

The original Riptide GP was quite fun but did have a habit of getting old pretty quickly. The new one improves upon that considerably by giving you a lot more stuff to do. There are more tracks, more watercrafts, more stunts, craft upgradability, online multiplayer and updated visuals. All of this makes Riptide GP2 a solid sequel and definitely worth the $2.99 price tag.

Rating: 8/10
Pros: Exciting gameplay, lots of new stunts, superb visuals
Cons: Non-Tegra 4 Android devices don’t get the extra visual effects regardless of hardware capability, multiplayer limited to four players

The new Nexus 7 vs. iPad mini: Tech Specification Shootout

It comes packed with features such as 7-inch 1920×1200 HD display with 323 ppi, a quad-core Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 Pro clocked at 1.5GHz, along with an Adreno 320 GPU and 2GB RAM.
So how does it stack up against the iPad mini? Here’s a detailed comparison table where we have compared the tech specs of the new Nexus 7 and iPad mini.

As you can see from the tech specs, Google has certainly upped the ante with the launch of the new Nexus 7 with the Retina-like 1920*1200 (1080p) resolution Display, faster processor, lot more RAM, surround sound, and starting at an extremely affordable price of $229, which is $100 cheaper than the iPad mini. At that price difference, Apple will have a tough time convincing people even if it launches the iPad mini with Retina Display and drops the price of the current generation iPad mini to $249. The only saving grace for Apple is its app ecosystem, which has over 375,000 apps that designed for the iPad.

Do you think, Apple will, for a change, have a tough time competing against an Android tablet?

T-Mobile USA announces $0 down payment for iPhone 5

T-Mobile has announced that it will be launching a new promotion where it has slashed the upfront price for smartphones like the iPhone 5 to $0.

Customers will be able to get the iPhone 5 without making a down payment, but there is a catch. Customers have a pay a slightly higher installment of $27 per month, on top of the monthly service charges.

“The number of reasons not to switch to T-Mobile this summer is ZERO,” said John Legere, president and chief executive officer, T-Mobile US. “This is a fantastic offer and we’re making it easier than ever for customers to get the latest amazing devices. Adding Zero Down in addition to JUMP!, and Simple Choice with no contract is all about making wireless work for consumers and shaking up this industry.”

Previously, customers had to make an upfront payment of $145.99 with $21 per month installment for 24 months. If you do the math, over 24 months you end up paying almost the same amount ($6*24 = $144). The offer is available only on the 16GB iPhone 5, it is not available on the 32GB and 64GB models.

e promotion goes live tomorrow. T-Mobile says that the promotion will be available for a limited time, but hasn’t provided an end date for it.

T-Mobile seems to have launched the promotion to counter AT&T’s Next program, which offers customers an option to upgrade their smartphone or tablet every twelve months with no down payment, no activation fee, no upgrade fee and no financing fees. Not surprisingly, AT&T’s Next early upgrade program goes like today.

It is good to see carriers fighting it out to get customers, unfortunately as we’ve pointed out none of them seem to reduce the cost of owning a smartphone.

Leaked Photo of Fully Assembled Budget iPhone ??

MacRumors (via iPhone5Skopen) point us to a photo posted on Chinese microblogging site Weibo, which appears to show the rear of fully assembled low-cost iPhone, which has been dubbed iPhone Lite.

It is quite similar to the leaked plastic rear shell, but as you can see in the image above, it also includes the legal notices from the FCC and other agencies.

It includes a rear-facing camera with LED flash and a hole for the back microphone, lightning connector and headphone jack at the bottom.

It also appears that the device has been fully assembled based on the metal rings around the headphone jack and lightning connector.

Check out this post to find out what we know about the iPhone Lite so far.

Earlier in the week, KGI Securities analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, who has a good track record when it comes to predicting Apple product plans, predicted that Apple will launch iPhone Lite in early September, followed by the launch of iPhone 5S in late September.

Android 4.3, a sweeter Jelly Bean

On 25th july android  releasing Android 4.3 — an upgrade to Jelly Bean that introduces a number of new features, including restricted profiles. Android 4.3 also adds Bluetooth Smart support (a.k.a Bluetooth Low-Energy); the latest in 3D graphics through OpenGL ES 3.0; and more.

Restricted profiles for tablets

Lightweight and portable, tablets are perfect for sharing with others. Last October we added support for multiple users. Each person has a separate space and can freely customize the tablet experience, from lockscreen to wallpaper, apps and folders.

In Android 4.3,  introducing restricted profiles, which let you manage per-user access to apps and content. Restricted profiles can be used in any number of situations. For example, restricted profiles enable parental controls, so certain family members are prevented from accessing mature content. Alternately, retail stores can use tablets as kiosks that show product information, or shops can use tablets as point of sale systems, all while limiting access to apps.

To set up restricted profiles on your tablet, go to the Users section under Settings.

Bluetooth Smart support (a.k.a. Bluetooth Low-Energy)

Fitness sensors and other devices that use Bluetooth Smart technology open the door for a whole new class of mobile applications. Bluetooth Smart minimizes power usage while measuring and transmitting data, making both sensors and the phones or tablets connected to them more battery-efficient.

With Android 4.3, Nexus 4 can now connect to Bluetooth Smart sensors. Runtastic and many other developers are making Android apps compatible with these sensors.

Accelerated 3D graphics with OpenGL ES 3.0

Devices like the new Nexus 7 support OpenGL ES 3.0, the latest industry standard for accelerated 3D graphics. This brings photorealism to a whole new level in the games you're playing: blades of grass on the soccer field come alive, asphalt on the street looks real as you screech by, stubble on a villains' face almost pokes out of the screen. And with sophisticated effects like self-shadows, that villain looks even more menacing, casting a shadow on himself.

Dial pad autocomplete

With Android 4.3 we’ve introduced a new autocomplete feature in the dial pad. Just start touching numbers or letters and the dial pad will suggest phone numbers or names. To turn on this feature, open your phone app settings and enable “Dial pad autocomplete”.

Improved support for Hebrew, Arabic, Hindi, and more

We’ve made major progress on enabling right-to-left layouts across the platform user interface: dialer, home and lock screens, settings, and more. This work builds on the support that we introduced for right-to-left layouts for Hebrew and Arabic speakers in Android 4.2. We’ve also added support for Hindi, Afrikaans, Amharic, Swahili, and Zulu.

Android 4.3 is now rolling out now to Nexus devices, and will be available on the new Nexus 7 and Google Play edition devices soon.

Samsung Galaxy S4 wireless charger

This past week we have been enjoying a few more mobile options from the folks at Samsung. We reviewed their new Galaxy S 4 Active, and now we have the wireless charging dock available for some quick hands-on time. Samsung’s charging kit you are seeing here works with the Qi standard, just like many wireless chargers from Nokia, LG, and even the model for the Nexus 4. Samsung delivers a new battery cover to complete the task, so take a peek below.

Samsung finally unleashed the wireless charging kit on their online store recently, and for those interested we have a few thoughts on the package. The charging dock itself is quite large, much bigger in fact than both the Nexus 4 and LG’s wireless chargers. It has a durable and hefty feel, and a nice rubbery coating to keep the phone safe from any scratching while you toss it on and off for a quick charge.

While Samsung’s Galaxy S4 (now) comes in a wide array of colors, sadly the charging dock only has one option available: grey. Of course anyone should know the dock will be plugged into a nearby outlet using the same micro-USB cord as usual, then you just toss your phone on that charging dock platform for juice. Samsung makes it very apparent on the device with a sticker, that you’ll need to be perfectly aligned. This held true too, slight turns and the phone wouldn’t charge. So long as the middle is centered, you’ll be good though.

Unlike the Nexus 4, DROID DNA and a few others, the Galaxy S4 requires a replacement battery cover to enjoy the wireless charging capability. One which won’t be provided in the box, but a quick $39 will get you the color of your choice. Verizon and most carriers have them in store and online in both white or black. Sadly, you’ll also need to spend $49 for the charging pad, but the convenience may be worth it to some.

Speaking of the replacement battery back. It’s quite thick, and as you can see in the image below there’s a noticeable increase in thickness, but overall nothing to be concerned about. Compared to the Active below, you can see the difference. As a comparison the stock GS4 back is flush or thinner than the camera. Here you can see the lip added with the new back. The GS4 is thin already, so this almost gives it a more premium feel as it adds to the overall feel in your hand. That’s my opinion at least.

Sadly we wish this could have came standard, just like it did with the Nexus 4, HTC DROID DNA, Optimus G, and a few others. However, if you have the LG wireless charging kit, the Nexus 4 charger, or even some 3rd party Energizer models or even one from Nokia, they’ll all work with ease. All you’ll need is that replacement battery cover.

Take a peek at a few more pictures below, then decide if the near $90 price is worth it to you. We love the convenience personally, just wish it would have came standard. Not as an aftermarket purchase.
