People using BBM will now be able to switch from chat to video with the new features that are coming up. There is also more such as the ability to share the view from you camera with the user that you are currently speaking with and also the ability to show photos, your browser, or a business document. This is a pretty neat feature with is currently not available with rival messaging platforms.

BBM Voice

In addition to having the ability to actually switch from chat to video call, you can also switch from chat to voice calling also. You can speak to your BBM contacts for free, all over the world using your wi-fi connection. You will know instantly once your friends are available for calling because you will be notified much like Skype.

You will also be able to chat with your BBM friends within your apps and select your BBM contacts to invite them to join in on whatever you are doing. Facebook, Twitter, Blackberry Travel and Blackberry world are all BBM connected apps which means you can share your travel itinerary without leaving BBM

Skype for iOS updated to v4.1, brings HD video calls and better in-call quality

Skype pushed out an update for its iOS app, which brings only a few improvements the most important of which is support for HD video calling. It only works on the iPad 4, though.

Owners of other iGadgets also have reason update – the Skype v4.1 brings improvements to the call quality and stability. Also, the country code picker has been redesigned.

Early this year Skype released an update for the Windows Phone 8 app and added support for 720p video calls on the high-end phones, but those aren’t all that more powerful than an iPhone 5, so I don’t know what prevented Skype for including the Apple phone (which uses a chipset similar to the iPad 4).

Samsung Galaxy Core battery life test concludes, numbers are inside

We’ve had the Samsung Galaxy Core for enough time now that we got see how good the battery of the affordable smartphone is.

The Samsung Galaxy Core we have here on campus is of the dual-SIM variety which, in theory, should do worse than the single-SIM edition, having to power a second radio all the time. But is it really that bad? Find out after the break.

Now, the Samsung Galaxy Core comes equipped with an 1800 mAh Li-Ion battery, which needs to deal with those dual radios but also the Snapdragon S4 Play chipset and the 4.3″ WVGA screen. Those last two bits have proven to be pretty efficient, so the Galaxy Core is not without its chances to impress here.

The Samsung Galaxy Core managed almost 12 hours in the talk time test – 11:52 hours to be exact, which fairly good, considering that the low-power chipset and the screen can’t help it at all here.

That’s a very impressive result and points that the single-SIM Galaxy Core will get an even higher one because it doesn’t need to deal with a second always-on radio. But even the dual-SIM Galaxy Core gets more than enough juice out of the 1800 mAh juice pack.

Windows 8.1 released to manufacturers, users will have to wait until October 18 to get it

Windows 8.1 and Windows RT 8.1 have hit the RTM stage, meaning Microsoft has sent them out to device markers and with their help will do the finishing touches to the updated OS. The update will be released to the public on October 18.

Windows 8.1 is part of Microsoft’s new strategy – instead of waiting years to deliver new major features to their flagship OS, the company will move to a quick release schedule. And so, just 10 months after the initial launch of the OS comes its first major update.

Microsoft revealed most of the major changes in 8.1 pretty early on – like the return of the Start button (but not the Start menu), up to three Metro apps sharing the screen, better search, new lockscreen, Skype integration, offline SkyDrive access and so on.

You can check out a video of an early leaked version of Windows 8.1 and even download the Preview.

The RTM version of Windows 8.1, however, is still off limits to consumers, even MSDN and TechNet subscribers.

Windows 8.1 is not just an update for current devices either, Microsoft is promising many innovative new devices, “smallest tablets to the most lightweight notebooks to versatile 2-in-1s, as well as industry devices designed for business,” arriving in time for the holiday season.

Samsung is promoting BlackBerry Messenger in Africa, “coming soon to Galaxy smartphones”

BlackBerry Messenger was supposed to hit the Android and iOS app stores today, but there’s nothing just yet (but you can try the beta). More interesting is that Samsung has now kicked-off its promotion of BBM – earlier this month the two companies struck a deal to promote the messenger in Africa.

CrackBerry forum member PauloPlmenta spotted an ad of the Galaxy S4 running BlackBerry Messenger during a football game (Manchester United vs. Chelsea) broadcast in Mozambique.

Samsung Mobile Ghana is also taking part of the campaign by posting teasers on Facebook.

There was even a video ad that prematurely made its way to YouTube, but has since been pulled down. I’m not sure if this is the same video, but it shows the Galaxy S4 next to what appears to be the Galaxy Star and the Galaxy Note 10.1. It’s not clear how long this video will stay up.

Anyway, the BlackBerry Messenger will be available through Samsung’s own app store (but in the Play Store too). Samsung, of course, has its own messenger, ChatON, but that one is yet to gain any sort of traction.

Phiaton Bridge MS500 over-ear headphones review

The Phiaton Bridge MS500 headphones are the manufacturer’s most capable and luxurious offering to date. Crafted from materials such as perforated leather and machined aluminum, the headset packs fashion-forward looks to go with aspirations to take on the established heavy hitters on the market.

I’ve walked out impressed out of my last two encounters with Phiaton products. The MS500 however has entered a whole new, ultra-competitive market segment, currently dominated by the likes of Beats Audio’s latest Studio headset, as well as the hordes of other offerings fighting to chip away from its market share. Read on to find out how the latest Phiaton creation fares as a daily driver!

Retail package

Unsurprisingly, the Phiaton Bridge MS500 headphones come in a large, well-appointed retail box. Inside it, you will find the headset, a soft carrying case, a microphone-equipped cable, a regular audio cable, a 6.3mm adaptor, and a warranty card.

Furthermore, thanks to the use of premium materials, the MS500 make many of its price-range competitors look cheap in comparison.

Build quality is on par with the looks of the MS500. The headset looks and feels well-crafted and ready to take plenty of daily use. The same goes for its detachable audio cables, whose plugs are entirely made of metal.

Ergonomics

The Phiaton Bridge MS500 headphones weigh in at a reasonable 250 grams. The ear cushions are nice and soft, so, in my experience, I found the MS500 comfortable even during extended periods of time.

The headphones are not marketed as noise-cancelling, though I found them to provide above average noise isolation.

Both dedicated audio cables for the headset are cloth-wrapped and tangle-free. The dedicated single-button remote on the microphone-equipped cable has a pleasant metal finish and is easy to work with. The headset features ambidextrous audio inputs, so users can pick which side to plug the audio cable on.

The MS500 can be folded for easier storage in the soft pouch. Regarding the latter, I do believe that a hard-shell case would have been a better solution – soft pouch still requires caution when storing the headset.

Sound

The Phiaton Bridge MS500 headphones are equipped with newly developed 40mm drivers. Oversized Neodymium magnets are in charge of providing deep bass. The MS500’s frequency response ranges between 15Hz and 22 kHz, while sensitivity and impedance come in at 99dB and 16Ohms respectively.

In real-life terms, I found the sonic experience which the MS500 extremely well-balanced – much like the rest of the manufacturer’s product range. The bass came out really strong, but without sacrificing the clarity of the high range.

In a few rare occasions, I found the mid-range slightly compromised. The trait however, is difficult to catch during casual listening in my opinion. It depends heavily on the music style which is played.

Overall, the MS500 sonic experience is easily moldable through the EQ settings. I rank such pleasant neutrality highly, as many headphones these days have too much “character” for my taste.

Final words

The Phiaton Bridge MS500 headphones are easily among the most stylish offerings in their price range. More importantly, in the same manner as the rest of the manufacturer’s lineup, the MS500 back their strong visual appeal with good build quality and sound.

The MSRP of the Phiaton Bridge MS500 headphones is $299.99. A number of retailers however offer the headset for a much more tempting $269.

Moto X gets torn apart, reveals some design ingenuity underneath

Nothing ever escapes the custom designed opening picks at iFixit and the new Moto X is no exception. The newly released smartphone from Motorola spent some quality time at iFixit, exposing its insides for all to see.

According to iFixit, the Moto X isn’t particularly difficult to take apart, once you get past the tenacious back cover that uses a copious amount of glue to stick to the phone. The cover itself, however, is made from a nice woven fabric material that is actually see through if you look carefully.

Motorola has seemingly spent a lot of time thinking the construction of the Moto X. iFixit found some notable highlights in the construction, such as the modular headphone jack, microphone assembly mounted on top of the earpiece assembly connected by spring contacts, mid frame held by pins protruding from the display assembly, etc.

Of course, most consumers would never see any of this but it’s nice to know that some thought went into making this phone. You can check out the complete teardown in the link below.

Samsung Galaxy Tab 3 Kids edition launches next month

Samsung Galaxy Tab 3 Kids edition launches next month

Samsung seems to be preparing a Kids edition of its Galaxy Tab 3 7.0 slate. The tablet is called Galaxy Tab 3 Kids and will launch this September.

The specs of the customized Tab 3 Kids are identical to those of its vanilla sibling – it comes with a 7″ TFT display with a resolution of 1024×600 pixels, runs on a 1.2GHz dual-core processor and features a 3MP camera, 1GB of RAM and 8GB expandable storage.

The Tab 3 Kids runs on a deeply customized Android 4.1 Jelly Bean with completely redesigned and simplified UI. Samsung will preload lots of educational software, games and multimedia for the kids too.

There is no official announcement yet, nor is there a rumored date and price. Samsung’s official website for Korea has already listed the slate’s manual, so we guess the Galaxy Tab 3 Kids will indeed hit the stores very soon as the source suggests.

‘PhoneLocator Pro’ for Android app review

Lately our smartphones have become one of our most precious possessions, partly because they store so much of our private data but also because they are usually quite expensive. That’s why theft is as great a worry as it ever was, while misplacement is quite the nuisance. Luckily we’ve got remote management and phone tracking apps to help us in these times of distress. Recently, Google has also recognized the importance of remote tracking our smartphones and has delivered its first attempt in the category.

PhoneLocator Pro is one of the most functional `third-party application for the Android platform, that helps you track and remotely manage your smartphones. Today, we will take a look at the features and the functionality of the app to see if it’s worth your cash. Title PhoneLocator Pro

Developer RVO
Platform Android
Content Rating Low Maturity
Size 3.11MB
Price $5.37

Key Features:

With PhoneLocator Pro, you can track your phone’s position and manage them with a set of security features. A computer with an active internet connection or a cell phone, which can send text messages, is what you need to start tracking your device.

When the app is launched for the very first time, it allows you to set a web interface account, which can be used to monitor your smartphone whenever you need it. You are further required to tune few settings, according to your preferences and that’s it, you are done with your part.

PhoneLocator Pro now allows you to trace your smartphone on Google maps, and learn about its traveled distance. The app also takes a picture from the front-facing camera of the device when there are unsuccessful unlock attempt and the image is sent to your email address immediately.

The best part of the app is its audio recording capabilities. The “record audio” feature records the sound in the vicinity from the device’s microphone and again, the file with the recording is sent to your preferred email within a few seconds. This unique feature can be initiated from the web interface and our tests revealed that the recordings were of pretty high quality.

The list of useful features with PhoneLocator just continues with its lock and unlock with Wi-Fi option. It allows you to keep your smartphone unlocked on known Wi-Fi networks (of course you need to feed your networks to the app before it starts functioning), and will immediately lock the device once you leave the network.

The SIM card swap protection option is another cool feature of the app. Once a SIM card is registered with the app, this feature will prevent unauthorized SIM changes and will lock your smartphone as soon as the registered SIM is removed.

PhoneLocator Pro also has the ability to auto enable the GPS, whenever required to get the accurate positioning and the location of the device. However, this feature is limited to experienced users with rooted phones.

Lastly, the PhoneLocator Pro app can be hidden from the app drawer, so that no one knows about your secret security guard. You can also retrieve the app as and when you require, using a few pre-set codes or commands.

Verdict:

If you are worried about your expensive smartphone being lost or stolen, then PhoneLocator Pro is just the app that needs to be installed on our device. The app is a great choice as far as security is concerned, but works nicely as phone tracker and phone finder too.

The app works reliably anytime and anywhere in the world. And, the host of the features PhoneLocator Pro offer is hardly matched by any other app in the market.

Since, the app runs in the background most of the time, it does take its toll on the battery, but it is overshadowed by the fact that the app secures your smartphone all the time. To send the commands from the web interface and to communicate with the app, the device needs to have an active internet connection. And we did notice that the app consumes a lot of data while communicating with the web interface and also when the audio recorded, image files are being sent to our address.

All in all, PhoneLocator Pro is one of the best and most accurate tracking applications available for Android devices. Install the app and don’t worry about your smartphone being lost or stolen ever again.

Rating: 9/10
Pro: Host of useful features, flexible; app management with web interface as well as by text messages.
Cons:Fairly high data consumption, strain on the battery.

Google launches Play Store v4.3.10 update with minor tweaks

Google has launched an update for the Google Play Store app bringing it to version 4.3.10. The update doesn’t bring major user interface changes, as most of the updates are under the hood.

Android Police has dug around the app’s inner workings and have found exactly what the fixes and improvements are. In the latest version of the Play Store Google introduces the “Recently updated” section. Its idea is simply to provide you an app list of the ones that have received an update most recently.

Next up are the updated app notifications, which are now combined into a single notification instead of each app having a separate one. The Play Books part of the Store is now updated to show the list price of the book you’re purchasing giving you a better idea of the savings you make.

If you’re interested in all the details regarding the update, the source link below is well worth the read. There you can also find the download link for the Play Store v4.3.10 app if you don’t feel like waiting and prefer to side-load it.

Android 4.2.2 for Samsung Galaxy Note 8.0 now seeding

Samsung is pushing hard with the Android updates this week. First we saw the 4.2.2 Jelly Bean version rolling out for the Galaxy Tab 2 7.0, then it hit the Galaxy S II Plus, and now the Galaxy Note 8.0 is following suit.

The update is no surprise since we already knew Samsung has scheduled the update process of its slates to complete by the end of September.

The Android 4.2.2 update for tablets brings a few important new features including multiple user accounts, lockscreen widgets, DayDream and a new two-tier notification panel.

According to earlier reports the Samsung Galaxy Note 8.0 won’t be stopping with Android 4.2 and will be getting Android 5.0 eventually.

The update is currently rolling out for the LTE version of the Note 8.0 in the UK, but we expect other countries and versions to follow soon. We also expect even more Tabs to be updated in the next couple of weeks.

Microsoft drops Surface Pro price by $100

After recently dropping the Surface RT prices by a cool $150, Microsoft has now announced that the Surface Pro will be receiving a $100 price drop, which means prices for the 64GB model now start at $799.

The offer is only for a limited time between August 4 and August 29 and is only available to customers in Canada, China, Hong Kong, Taiwan, and the US.

Microsoft recently faced a major loss in the region of $900 million due to poor Surface sales. The price cuts are an obvious attempt to clear stock that has piled up over the months and also signal the imminent arrival of a successor.

5 Tricks to Increase Google Page Rank for Your Blog

Google page rank is an elusive term that most bloggers don't completely understand. In fact, there are probably few people in the world who completely understand it, because Google keeps the secrets of its page rank algorithm very guarded. Boosting your Google page rank isn't something you can do in a day. If it were, everyone would have a Google Page Rank of 10. Keep reading to learn a few of the tricks to increase your blog's Google page rank that are fairly easy to implement over time.

1. Get Incoming Links from High Quality Related Sites
The best way to increase your Google page rank might not make a difference over night, but it will make a big difference in time. The key is to get incoming links to your blog from highly authoritative and well-trafficked websites and blogs that are related your blog's topic.

For example, if you write a blog about finance, getting a link from The Wall Street Journal website would give your blog a big boost. If you could get more high quality links from popular sites such as Fortune.com, SmartMoney.com, and so on, your blog's Google page rank would most certainly jump.

2. Remember to Use SEO Techniques
Search engine optimization is an important part of increasing Google page rank. Read the top 10 SEO tips, and make sure you're using them.

3. Write Original Content
Do not copy content from another site. Even if you're copying and republishing your own content from one page or one site to another, do not do it. Google's algorithm cannot tell the difference and will either give the originating site the credit and downgrade the others or downgrade all of the sites that publish the duplicated content. Google acts harshly toward any kind of content scraping, even if you're completely innocent. Once your page rank is downgraded, it can be nearly impossible to get it back up again.

4. Don't Go Link Crazy
Many bloggers hear that it's important to have incoming links to boost their blog's Google page rank, so they start leaving comments anywhere and everywhere across the web, participating in random link exchanges with anyone who is willing to participate, and so on. Remember, as the first item on this list says, Google's algorithm cares about quality links, not quantity. In fact, your page rank could be downgraded if your blog is deemed to be little more than a bunch of links.

5. Write Great Content
If you write great content, people will want to link to it, particularly high quality websites. Get on the radar screen of popular bloggers and websites by leaving comments, writing guest posts, participating in forums, emailing directly, writing articles, and so on. Build relationships with people who write for high quality sites, and the number of quality, incoming links you get to your blog will grow organically over time.

Facebook brings Cover Feed to Android app, makes Facebook Home seem even more pointless

Facebook has released a new update for their Android app, which brings one of the key features of the ill-fated Facebook Home app. Now, through an option in the settings menu, you can enable the Cover Feed feature on your Android device, without having to install Facebook Home app.

If you are not aware, Cover Feed takes over the lockscreen on your Android device with a custom lockscreen that plays a slideshow of your friends’ Facebook photos in the background underneath the unlock button. While it sounds great in theory, actually having all your friends’ photos appear on your lockscreen isn’t such a great idea as most of the time the photos aren’t as good as you’d like them to be (not with my friends, at least).

Cover Feed, along with Chat Heads, was one of the key features of Facebook Home. Now, you can have both without actually installing that app (Chat Heads are available through the Facebook Messenger app). This means now you have even fewer reasons to install Facebook Home, and there weren’t many to begin with.

There is a catch, however. Just like the Facebook Home app, the Cover Feed feature only works on select Android devices as of now. The list currently includes Samsung Galaxy S4, Samsung Galaxy S III, Samsung Galaxy Note II, Nexus 4, HTC One X, HTC One X+ and HTC One. More devices should be added in future.

Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 7.0 now getting Android 4.2 Jelly Bean

Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 7.0 is part of the long list of Samsung devices that were destined to get the Android 4.2 according to an earlier leak. The wait for the owners of the slate is now over as Samsung has just started seeding the Android 4.2.2 update for it.

Unfortunately, according to the previous info, this Android 4.2.2 update will be the last major one for the Galaxy Tab 2 7.0. Other Galaxy Tab 2 tablets will be soon getting the same update and the process is scheduled to complete by the end of September.

The Android 4.2.2 update for tablets brings minor but important improvements such as multiple user accounts, lockscreen widgets, DayDream, new dedicated notification panel, etc.

We still have some tiny hope that those devices supposed to end their life-cycle on Android 4.2 may get 4.3 considering how minor that one is, but we wouldn’t bet the house on it. Note that even if this is the last major update for the slate, you may get the occasional minor release to squash some bugs.

Snapdragon 800-powered Samsung Galaxy S4 Active shows up in GFXBench scores

A South Korean version of the water-resistant Samsung Galaxy S4 Active called SHV-E470S popped up in GFXBench scores and wouldn’t you know it, it packs a Snapdragon 800 chipset and not the Snapdragon 600 that the international version has.

At this point this should come as no surprise – we saw a Snapdragon 800-powered Galaxy S4, a Snapdragon 600 Note II, dual-mode S4 and S4 mini, Samsung is trying out all the combinations.

The benchmark detected a quad-core processor at 2.3GHz with Adreno 330 GPU in an MSM8974 chipset, a.k.a. Snapdragon 800. The score for the off-screen test is 25.9fps, when the Snapdragon 600 version did 16fps, the I9505 Galaxy S4 did 17.1fps and the Snapdragon 800-packing Sony Xperia Z Ultra does 23.1fps.

GLBenchmark 2.7 T-Rex (1080p off-screen)
Higher is better

Samsung Galaxy S4 Active (S800)           25.9
Sony Xperia Z Ultra                                 23.1
Samsung Galaxy S4 (S600)                     17.1
Samsung Galaxy S4 (Octa)                      17.1
Apple iPad 4                                           16.8
Samsung Galaxy S4 Active (S600)          16
Google Nexus 10                                    13.9
LG Optimus G                                        13.9
Sony Xperia Z                                        13.5
Sony Xperia Tablet Z                              13
Sony Xperia ZL                                      12.8
Samsung Galaxy Note II                          4.9

The SHV-E470S Galaxy S5 Active also probably supports LTE-Advanced, same as the SHV-E330S Galaxy S4 LTE-A.

Note that those are phones for South Korea and there are rumors of an I9506 Galaxy S4, which will bring Snapdragon 800 power internationally. Fingers crossed that the new Galaxy S4 Active will have an international version too.
